Old National Bank Foundation Awards $5,000 Grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters

Funds will bolster High School Bigs program

Big Brothers Big Sisters, A Community of Caring has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Old National Bank Foundation. The funds will assist in providing mentoring services to at least 300 elementary and high school students through the High School Bigs program.

“We’re thrilled that this grant will help fund the High School Bigs program,” says Amy Kuchta, Big Brothers Big Sisters chief executive officer. The High School Bigs program has a positive impact on the children being mentored (Littles) as well as the students who are doing the mentoring (Bigs). “Research shows that students who serve as Bigs in our High School Bigs program learn leadership, time management and decision-making skills,” Kuchta says.

The Bigs and Littles meet once a week for 45 minutes to play games, do homework together, or just talk. “The Bigs develop a friendship with their Littles and the younger students really look up to the older students,” Kuchta says. “Because of the caring relationship that develops, the younger students’ school performance is boosted and self-confidence is raised, putting the children on a path to greater success.”

Janet Heldt Baas, president of the Old National Bank Foundation, says “the Foundation is proud to invest in organizations that clearly work with measurable outcomes to strengthen our community.”

“We appreciate Old National Bank’s support as we strive to achieve our mission of providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever,” Kuchta says.
